Someone Call 911!
topleft topfill topright
The day started out as a normal day on Saturday, June 5th. The Sea Ventures Dive Club had its annual beach dive picnic at Heisler Park/Picnic Beach. There was a nice turn out from the club. Those that made the trek out for some diving were rewarded with good viz and some nice kelp forest patches.

After the diving the group was hungry so we started the BBQ early for some hamburgers, chips, side dishes, and refreshments. Everyone was enjoying the conversation, the joking around, and having a good time when we noticed a group of three making their way down to the beach for some diving. We decided to watch the group for a bit as they made their way down to the beach and then went right back into enjoying the day.

About 15-20 minutes as the divers went into the water someone from our group glanced out to the ocean and noticed the 3 divers coming back to the beach. Several jokes were made that they must have forgotten their weight belts. So the group decided to watch the 3 divers as they made their way back. After watching them for a few minutes we found it extremely odd that they were kicking really hard and fast to get back to the beach. This is when we heard that drop everything phrase “Someone Call 911!

At this point multiple club members rushed down the ramp to the beach to help the diver out. Several members entered the water to help pull and aid the diver into shore, while others were orchestrating calling 911.

As it turns out one of the three divers was experiencing extreme difficulties breathing and his faced turned a pale white. The Sea Ventures Dive Club members were instrumental in helping out this fellow diver. By the time the troubled diver was pulled from the water the lifeguards and ambulance were only 5 minutes away.

I’m extremely proud to be associated with an experienced dive club that can joke around, have a good time, enjoy diving, but when things get serious like a call for help they can flip the switch and jump right into action to provide assistance and aid to a person in need.

Scuba Show 2010
topleft topfill topright
On May 15th the Sea Ventures Dive Club headed out to Long Beach for the Scuba Show. We had a good size group of 10 people to hit the show in force. As always it’s great to visit with the vendors and learn about new products, potential dive destinations, talk to industry experts, and just hang out with friends. I personally enjoyed investigating the individual shark cage that acted as a dive vehicle. In addition, it was a treat to see Wyland in person painting a great white.

After, walking the show for a couple of hours we headed to Rock Bottom Brewery for dinner and drinks. This is always a good place to try some microbrews and they didn’t disappoint. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals, though we did have a little hiccup with a burger order that they forgot to put in.

To finish off the evening the group headed back to the dive shop for our own Casino Night. The competitive spirits came out as we played Wits & Wagers for several hours. Before we knew it was already 11 p.m. and it was time to call it a day.

Old Marineland Diving
topleft topfill topright
Today, May 8th, Kevin and I met at Old Marineland for the Sea Ventures Club Dive. Neither of us have dove this location so we didn't know what to expect. We were both pleasantly surprised with the location. After parking there is a paved pathway down to the beach. I would say the downhill walk is about 10 minutes. The walk up is the fun part, but fortunately the incline is gradual so it doesn't seem so bad. The beach is completely filled with rocks, no sand anywhere, so the entry and exit can be a bit tricky. We were lucky and the waves coming in were about 1 foot.

We headed out along the reef to a kelp bed where we dropped down to about 25 feet. We took a 90 degree heading and essentially swam parallel to the beach. We saw quite a bit of life from a number of kelp bass, rock fish, star fish, senoritas, and an octopus. The life here had some significant size to them, which was refreshing to see. The viz was about 10 feet when you were in the kelp forest, and the water temperature was 55 degrees.

All in all we had a fun time and it was nice to get back in the water. This is definitely a spot that I would come back to in the future.

An Attempt to find Malaga Cove
topleft topfill topright
The Sea Ventures Dive Club scheduled a dive a Malaga Cove this past Saturday, July 12th. My small group contacted the shop the night before to make sure the dive was a "go."

Seems we were the only ones willing to drive the distance to Palos Verdes ...and as with every visit to the PV area... we got lost.
Although we didn't actually find Malaga, it didn't really matter because we were the only four people (or so we thought) that confirmed going on the dive. So we simply found another really cool spot to dive.
We ended up right next to the the Point Vicente lighthouse. A beautiful location both above and below the water line. And...we had no doubt we could spearfish as it is well marked as a fishing access.
Patricia Polcyn and her two kids, Rebecca and Adam, along with Monte Beard geared up and proceeded to traverse the long dirt path to the shore below. Once there, the beach (or should I say rock pile) was difficult to manuever...and the rocks got pretty slippery as you neared the waterline.
This would not be a spot to dive if the conditions were even slightly rough. And it is certainly NOT a dive spot for anyone who even begins to get short of breath...because coming back up after the dive makes Mount Everest look miniscule. But the dive was well worth the drive and the climb on this particular day. Lots of mature kelp, a nice mixture of sand flats for halibut, and rock piles for ledges and growth.
Although our game bags came up empty, there were plenty of small fish swimming about. I would return to this spot again in the future...and maybe someday I will actually dive Malaga....if is truely exists!!! But it will be on a Sunday...when traffic retuning home is less a factor in the equation.
PS: Rumor has it Gary Pike decided to join in on the club dive that Saturday, but he actually FOUND Malaga Cove. Go figure !!!!

Teaching about diving
topleft topfill topright
On Tuesday Feb. 26, 2008 I had the privilege of having our own club president Dennis Workman come to La Sierra High School and teach my science class about one of my favorite subjects, S.C.U.B.A diving. He delivered an interesting and informative lesson on diving while pictures (mostly from our Bonaire trip last summer) played on the screen beside him. During the course of the day he introduced the sport of diving to about 200 students. He told them some great stories and gave them a chance to ask questions. The students paid close attention as he told them how he chased a shark to take it's picture. Watching the pictures and listening to Dennis describe what it is like to "fly" under water several students said they want to take up diving. I know it makes me want to go diving. Thanks again Dennis, the kids and I really appreciate you taking time to come and share your diving experiences with us. SVDC News

Diving with the Wreck Divers of Southern California, by Dennis Workman
topleft topfill topright
Last December 15th, the morning of the Sea Ventures annual Christmas party, I was able to take a trip with the Southern California Wreck Divers aboard the Pacific Star out of Redondo Beach. Our destination, Catalina Island. A spot just outside of Avalon bay in 100’ of water, between buoys 45 and 46. A disintegrating ship wreck known as the Valiant. SVDC News

2008 Lobster Punch Card Required
topleft topfill topright
Those of you who enjoy hunting bugs will need to know that changes are on the way in 2008. When lobster season starts next fall, each hunter will be required to have a "punch card" at a cost of $7.90 each. This card is in addition to the normal sport fishing license and Ocean Enhancement Stamp. Any time a hunter catches a lobster they are required to indicate the take on the card. The card is then to be mailed to the Calfiornia Dept. of Fish and Game at the end of the year. It is our understanding at this point that you can purchase additional cards once one is filled.

The limit in possession will still be seven, but there is no maximum number allowed per season. We don't have to worry about this until lobster season 2008, but in the meantime, remeber that you 2007 license expired when the new year rang in. You will need to purchase a 2008 fishing license and Ocean Enhancement Stamp to finish the season which ends March 19th.
