News › An Attempt to find Malaga Cove
The Sea Ventures Dive Club scheduled a dive a Malaga Cove this past Saturday, July 12th. My small group contacted the shop the night before to make sure the dive was a "go."
Seems we were the only ones willing to drive the distance to Palos Verdes ...and as with every visit to the PV area... we got lost.
Although we didn't actually find Malaga, it didn't really matter because we were the only four people (or so we thought) that confirmed going on the dive. So we simply found another really cool spot to dive.
We ended up right next to the the Point Vicente lighthouse. A beautiful location both above and below the water line. And...we had no doubt we could spearfish as it is well marked as a fishing access.
Patricia Polcyn and her two kids, Rebecca and Adam, along with Monte Beard geared up and proceeded to traverse the long dirt path to the shore below. Once there, the beach (or should I say rock pile) was difficult to manuever...and the rocks got pretty slippery as you neared the waterline.
This would not be a spot to dive if the conditions were even slightly rough. And it is certainly NOT a dive spot for anyone who even begins to get short of breath...because coming back up after the dive makes Mount Everest look miniscule. But the dive was well worth the drive and the climb on this particular day. Lots of mature kelp, a nice mixture of sand flats for halibut, and rock piles for ledges and growth.
Although our game bags came up empty, there were plenty of small fish swimming about. I would return to this spot again in the future...and maybe someday I will actually dive Malaga....if is truely exists!!! But it will be on a Sunday...when traffic retuning home is less a factor in the equation.
PS: Rumor has it Gary Pike decided to join in on the club dive that Saturday, but he actually FOUND Malaga Cove. Go figure !!!!-Patricia
